Founded in Seattle in 1897, C.C. Filson is an American outfitter, manufacturer, and distributor of goods like outdoor clothing, accessories, and luggage for outdoor enthusiasts.
Filson’s storefront on the Magento 1 (M1) platform was being self-hosted on AWS by their in-house development team. When Adobe announced M1 end-of-life (EOL) by June 2020, Filson decided to re-platform to Magento 2 (M2). However, their team was worried if they had the necessary M2 hosting expertise or even the resource bandwidth to continue with self-hosting.
Filson was experiencing solid growth year over year, and the development team had growing concerns around scaling and security as the business grew. Though various alternatives were evaluated, Shinola was not fully convinced about their flexibility and had concerns with the price. As a result, they started exploring other cloud delivery options available in the market.
Need for Magento 2 hosting expertise
DIY cloud hosting on AWS
Filson wanted their in-house development team to focus on application development and delegate cloud delivery responsibilities to an external service provider with proven Magento expertise.
Shinola was introduced to Webscale’s bundled cloud delivery offering, with which they could optimize cost and drive efficiencies as it could replace many of the services they were paying for separately with DIY hosting on AWS. These included a web application firewall, edge caching, and CDN. Webscale also offered Filson greater freedom with deep observability and control over their environment.
Filson has deployed Webscale Enterprise with hosting on AWS with Webscale CloudEDGE Security and Webscale CloudEDGE Application Testing as add-on solutions. The Magento 2 site went live on Webscale in mid-2020.
In addition to greater flexibility, lower cost, and Magento expertise, Filson also selected Webscale for its predictive auto-scaling and 360-degree security. When Filson was self-hosting on AWS, running a promotion meant their developer team had to coordinate with multiple stakeholders to ensure the infrastructure would scale up to meet the surge in traffic. It was manual, cumbersome, and failed to deliver at times. With Webscale’s technology stack, scaling is fast, predictive and automated, ensuring consistent performance even when there are thousands of concurrent users on the site.
For Filson, security has always been a concern while self-hosting, though they’ve never had a major attack. With Webscale’s 360-degree security, carding attempts and other threats are no longer a concern because security protocols are in place to constantly monitor, detect and defend against malicious behavior through Web Controls and the Webscale Portal.
Webscale also takes care of the timely implementation of patches and upgrades to ensure 100% PCI-compliance.
“Our initial success with Shinola gave us the confidence to engage Webscale for Filson. We have seen Webscale’s technology and processes achieve remarkable maturity in the last few years. I like the Webscale Portal for the great observability it offers. Their technical support and customer success teams are equally proactive. We are extremely happy we decided to entrust Webscale with the secure cloud delivery of our Magento 2 stores.”
